“The great urban escape”

Rosewood’s second Thai outpost in the heart of Bangkok welcomes you before you get there. The building is inspired by the Thai gesture of welcome – the “wai” – and once you arrive, that sense of welcome is personified by every single member of staff. Guest rooms are spacious, but the pool sky villas give added luxury, featuring a large terrace and private plunge pool to get closer to a city that never sleeps.

Wat Phra Kaew
Wat Phra Kaew

"While Bangkok is a city full of temples, there is only one “wat,” as they are known in Thailand, which is home to an emerald Buddha -- the sacred Wat Phra Kaew. Its origins are lost to time, but the statue is believed to have been discovered in the northern city of Chiang Rai in 1434 A.D., after a stucco Buddha image was struck by lightning, revealing the remarkable treasure within.

"TIP: Beyond the building housing the Buddha, walk along the inside of the temple walls, which tell the story of the ancient Indian poem Ramayana through a series of remarkable paintings."

Wat Arun
Wat Arun

"One of the most recognizable temples in the country -- its likeness appears on the back of the 10 baht coin -- Wat Arun sits on the opposite bank of the river to the Grand Palace. Meaning “temple of dawn,” its magnificent Khmer-influenced central spire, known as a prang, resembles the towers of Angkor Wat and symbolizes the mountain at the center of the Buddhist universe.

"TIP: Pay close attention to the colorful decoration on the five prang at the center of the temple—the intricate patterns consist of pottery and seashells brought to the city by Chinese traders."

Wat Po
Wat Po

"You won't find more Buddha images in any Bangkok temple than in Wat Po, including a 46- meter-long reclining statue. However this impressive wat is also famous as the home of Thai  massage which is still taught on site with sessions available; it makes for a relaxing break from sightseeing.   In the mid-1800s King Rama III established the country's first ever university here.

"TIP: Along one side of the reclining Buddha you'll find a series of 108 brass pots -- exchange your notes for a bag of satang coins and receive good luck by placing a coin in every pot."

Chatuchak
Chatuchak

"Known also as Jatujak or simply JJ, this weekend-only market is home to more than 15,000 stalls, spread over 27 sections, drawing crowds in excess of 300,000 per day. Without a doubt the largest market in the country, you can find everything you ever needed (and many things you didn't), from furniture to accessories, music to fashion, as well as food and drink.

"TIP: It's easy to get lost in this gargantuan center to all things retail, so pre-arm yourself with a copy of Nancy Chandler's Map of Chatuchak Weekend Market, available at city bookstores."

Floating Market
Floating Market

"There are numerous floating markets around Bangkok, so choosing the right one is really about what floats your boat -- pun intended. Taling Chan is only 12km from the city, and is the easiest to reach, but can get busy. For a more authentic experience, head to Amphawa -- it's an early start to reach it, but the flotilla of boats and authentic wooden houses make up for the lost sleep.

"TIP: When you've had enough of the market, go on a canal tour with a longtail boat driver -- at Amphawa, the tour includes a stop at Wat Bang Koong, a remarkable temple set inside a tree."

Bangkok National Museum
Bangkok National Museum

"Often overlooked by visitors who pass by on their way to the Grand Palace or Khao San Road, this museum contains an impressive array of artifacts, which takes the form of a tour through Thai history. The exhibits include works of art, ancient weapons, ceremonial objects and a building dedicated to royal chariots. On an interesting side note, before 1887 this was a palace.

"TIP: For a taste of how the royals once lived, spend some time in the “red house,” a traditional teak house made from interlocking wooden panels that was built more than 200 years ago."

MOCA
MOCA

"Though it's some way from the city center, the art on display at the privately owned Museum of Contemporary Art makes the taxi trip worth it. Run by Thai business mogul Boonchai Bencharonkul, the five-floor building houses one of the country's best collections of modern art, with some 800 pieces covering all mediums -- from sculpture to oil painting to furniture.

"TIP: Pick up a unique Bangkok souvenir in the MOCA Shop, from a T-shirt adorned with art prints to a range of MOCA-branded merchandise, art books and limited edition gold statues."

Thipsamai
Thipsamai

"There's probably no dish that's considered as quintessentially Thai as Pad Thai, the stir-fried noodles that come served with tofu, dried shrimp, shallots, bean sprouts, roasted peanuts and lime, as well as a generous portion of red chili powder. And there's no better place to try it than Thipsamai, which serves eight varieties and claims to be the city's oldest Pad Thai restaurant.

"TIP: Due to its popularity -- and that it's only open from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. -- the queues can be round the block. Pass the time by ordering a pre-dinner dessert from one of the nearby street stalls."

Sri Trat Restaurant & Bar
Sri Trat Restaurant & Bar

"Trat is a small province on Thailand’s eastern seaboard. Adjoining Cambodia, it’s famous for its natural beauty -- you’ll find the tourist island of Koh Chang here -- but also for its distinctive dishes which combine spicy herbs, fresh seafood, and wild fruits to produce one of the best cuisines in the country; order the massaman curry with durian and ceviche-style barracuda.

"TIP: Save room for their signature dessert selection, an absolute treat of a plate that includes soft crêpes filled with coconut and green beans and dumplings served in warm coconut milk."

Sorn
Sorn

"The owners of this restaurant, which occupies a 90-year-old wooden house down an otherwise quiet suburban lane, have obviously hit upon the right recipe for success, judging by the queues of hungry Bangkokians. The formula is deceptively simple: they serve a five-course menu of sharing plates, all made from traditional southern Thai recipes, in a luxury high-end setting.

"TIP: While down south many of these dishes are commonly accompanied by cheap local beer, Sorn ups the stakes with a list of pairing wines, with slightly sweet white wine recommended."

Restaurant Suhring
Restaurant Suhring

"Fine dining modern German cuisine is not a common feature of many culinary capitals, but Suhring makes you wish it were. Twin brothers Thomas and Mathias are stripping away the perception of heavy food from their homeland, and replacing it with inventive dishes that pair memories of their childhood with more contemporary culinary influences from Central Europe.

"TIP: Given you'll most likely not be familiar with the dishes, forget à la carte and place your trust in the twins and order either the “Klassiker” (classic) or “Erlebnis” (experience) set menus."

Sushi Ichizu
Sushi Ichizu

"Helmed by talented Japanese chef Riku Toda who, despite his youthful appearance, has already received plaudits at Michelin-star Sushi Sugita in his homeland, this hidden restaurant rewards adventurous diners with some of the best sushi in Bangkok, with quality imported ingredients prepared to exacting standards, at prices to match. Reservations are definitely recommended.

"TIP: Whether you choose the nigiri (THB4,000) or omakase (THB8,000) set menu, make sure you are not wearing any strong scents when you sit down to dine -- they're strictly banned to encourage olfactory appreciation of the dishes before you."
