In a country known more for its bankers and precision watches, a row of nine medieval townhouses surprises with its explosion of design flair. Over 10 years of work went into renovating the buildings to create this instant classic of a hotel, where none of the 49 rooms are identical. Furnishings with recognizable silhouettes by the likes of Josef Hoffmann and Ray Eames pepper the rooms, and balconies in some suites offer views over the Old Town. Free flow in-room snacks and drinks add a warm touch to complement the funky spaces.

One suite may feature venerable oak beams, another an antique tiled stove, grisaille murals, delicate frescos or elegant stucco.
