“Elemental Lakeside Elegance”

When the hairpin-curved roads that cut through the towering cedar forests give way to wind and water, you know you’ve arrived at the “Sea of Happiness” (Lake Chuzenji). With its seductive suites and elegant engawas (porches), the Ritz-Carlton Nikko overlooks the deep blue of Japan’s highest lake in the volcanic shadows of Mount Nantai. An embankment of box seats onto an all- seasons opera written by Mother Nature. This lakeside retreat 2.5 hours north of Tokyo is Feng Shui fabulousness fed by ancient hot springs, touching distance from temples in a naturescape carved by deities.

Best time to visit : Summer (July-August), Autumn (mid-October to mid-November), Winter (Jan-Feb)

What we love

Immersed in onsen opulence, you need nothing but the barest essentials: flaxen Yukata robes, a pair of wooden Geta sandals and whatever your Furoshiki (wrapping cloth) will hold. In between the hot-cold bathing, the seasonal kaiseki bentos, and the basalt stone spa treatments, do make time for the shrines, the epic waterfalls and, of course, that lake — all part of Nikko National Park, which has been drawing in visitors with its healing waters for over 1,200 years.

  • 94 of the largest open layout rooms and suites in the land, with floor-to-ceiling mountain or lake views, oversized stone baths, and imbued with geometric cypress wood designs
  • For those who don’t travel light, the entire 5th-floor Ritz-Carlton Suite, with adjoining rooms, offers 449 sqm of uninterrupted elegance, walk-ins to die for, gym studio and a massage room
  • With its indoor-outdoor bath, sauna, lounge and nature-framed treatment suits, the onsen is a Ritz-Carlton first — the steaming, healing heart of your stay
  • The Omamori amulets, upon departure, are a heartfelt touch we adore
