“Soulful Star of Shanghai”

Wherever Capella casts its lustrious light, things glow beautifully, as they do along the canopied, soulful avenues of Shanghai's French Concession, illuminating Jian Ye Li, the city's last enclave of shikumen (stone gate) lane houses. Opulently restored, 55 heritage, multi-levelled courtyard villas enclose an enchanting labyrinth of luxury envisioned by the late Jaya Ibrahim, adorned with touches of 1930s Shanghainese sophistication and more than a little French je ne sais quoi, with the culinary candescence cast by Pierre Gagnaire’s constellation of Michelin stars.

What we love

La vie en rose lives on in this cloister of calm in China’s busiest metropolis, sauntering distance through a discrete portal from the cafes, local eateries, boutiques and galleries that line this quietly cosmopolitan part of Shangai. For us, the luminous lamp-lit lanes add to the allure of residential life within, where the hallmark stone entranceways enclose lush floral-scented gardens, gently rippling fountains, sculptural bronzes and songbirds.

  • The Parisian fare at Le Comptoir leaves us (and the locals) swooning, and the viennoiserie at Le Boulangerie is equally so
  • The sense of home in the 1, 2, and 3-bedroom villas are unlike anywhere else in Shanghai
  • In the city that never sleeps, we have no problems resetting, in Auriga Spa’s float pods and treatments that correspond with the different phases of the Moon
  • Dive deep into dumplings spending a day learning Auntie Wai Po’s secrets
