In a country known for its mystic ruins, travelers might not be aware of Cambodia's sunny shores. Tucked between the Elephant Mountains and the Gulf of Thailand, Sihanoukville is Cambodia's answer to a seaside escape. While it's not a deserted stretch of coastline by any means - it is, after all, home to the country's only deep sea port with plenty of high-rises interrupting the skyline - there are a handful of offshore island gems that whisper promises of a tropical paradise.

There are plenty of resorts and guesthouses in Sihanoukville, but for the real tropical experience, you need to head towards the horizon. There are more than 20 islands in this province speckled in the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand, the largest of which is Koh Rong. For something a little more adventurous, head away from islands and beaches to the region's national parklands.
Near-daily flights link the southern coastal city of Sihanoukville to the capital Phnom Penh, a 45-minute jounrey which alternatively would take 9 hours by car. Though a lot less frequent, travelers can also get to Siem Reap and nearby Angkor Wat directly from Sihanoukville, also a 45-minute flight, or a 5-hour drive
